Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school in California which means that a majority of students come from homes with limited incomes. It is located in an urban environment. The school is culturally diverse and includes Latino, African-American, and Asian children.
They are working hard and trying to do their best.
They want to learn about the world and themselves. But often they enter school lacking literary, scientific, or mathematical experiences. They may not have many books at home or someone who reads to them. They may not have lots of modern creative toys. Therefore many students need an extra boost to catch up with their more advantaged peers.
My Project
Creativity is an important life skill that is hard to teach, but important to learn. These creative building toys are designed for free imaginative fun.
Making creative creations in our classroom MakerSpace encourages our students to develop the 4 C's needed for this century.
Creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication are skills developed in play and invention as much as in formal lessons. MakerSpace time is fun and enjoyable, but also nurtures creativity. These varied building tools and systems allow the children to explore and engineer in different ways. My students need these educational toys to help enrich their development and allow their creativity to thrive!
The plan for student use has two components. One, these building resources will be available to children to use during their recess and recreation times. Currently students are assigned to one game area and lack choices. Students that prefer more imaginative and creative quiet play have very few choices. Secondly, in the classroom these will be used in MakerSpace Time on STEAM Fridays and as an educational creative learning center. The goals are for students to develop their creativity and problem-solving design skills while having fun. They are also good for developing spatial sense and can improve math and science understanding as well as artistic design abilities.
