We are striving to produce on grade level readers and learners out of students who have struggled their whole school career. I hope that this will help to build their love of books and feed their curiosity for Science.
We are an inclusion classroom, which means that students who have special needs stay in our room and the Special Ed.
teacher and I co-teach. Perseverance is a word that we use often, and is our motto. Many of the students have special modification requirements for assignments, however if you were to walk into my classroom you would not be able to recognize which student were required to receive addition services. Each person works hard and attempts anything that is asked of them. They may struggle, but show a tenacity for success.
Our school is in the center of the city, but it has a neighborhood feel. The students do a great job of keeping our school clean and safe. Students are proud to be a part of the Cub pride.
My Project
We focus on finding a "Good Fit Book," and with this contribution the students will be able to build reading fluency, enhance his/her confidence, and create a hunger for reading. We also have a difficult time with some Science and Social Studies concepts. BrainPop Jr. is a wonderful kid friendly website that takes those concepts and explains them so that a eight year old can understand. The students will also learn many Language Art concepts from Brain Pop Jr. that are abstract, but the videos make clear. This will enrich their writings and help with making sense of what they are reading.
The foundation to being successful in school is reading.
My hope is to build such a classroom library that the students scramble to get to their hands on great books. I want to build confidence in these students, so that even if they struggle and feel like giving up, they know that they can persevere. With access to great tools a student can learn whatever he/she desires.
