Help me give my students more comfortable seating (to read independently for longer periods) and a more diverse selection of quality books that they will really want to read.
Our classroom is a learning community currently comprised of twenty-one amazing and culturally diverse 4th graders at an urban Title I school in Wisconsin. Some readers have special education needs and some speak more than one language and are still learning English, so I am trying to make sure we have just right book for independent reading and engaging mentor texts. I want to build a comfortable and flexible reading space and a classroom library that will help each and every one of my unique readers enjoy the daily practice of reading for pleasure and learning.
My Project
I am hoping to get more comfortable seating options for my 4th graders, so they can get more comfortable and enjoy digging into amazing books! The Flex-Space Comfy Floor Seats will provide a more cushioned floor option with back support, while the Calming Colors® Soft Seats will allow learners to sit on the hard floor, but be comfortable while build reading stamina. I am also building crate seats for them to sit at low table spots, and I am also just starting to add to our classroom library.
I want to purchase more biographical books like I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark and Sonia Sotomayor: A Judge Grows in the Bronx as well as add nonfiction to go with our weather and energy units.
Books like: Tornado!: The Story Brrehind These Twisting, Turning, Spinning, and Spiraling Storm and Renewable Energy: Discover the Fuel of the Future With 20 Projects (Build It Yourself).Lastly, I want to start building a poetry section, so I found: Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets and Life Doesn't Frighten Me.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to develop lifelong reading habits (and hopefully a love of reading and learning), you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement as well!
My hope is to provide more flexible seating and then focus additional classroom funds on building a diverse and engaging leveled classroom library.
