Nurturing a Healthy Environment for Healthy Gardening.
My students need the items to create a healthier collaborative vegetable, herb, and fruit growing experience in our healthy gardening and cooking project, and to extend our project into beekeeping and environmental health.
My wonderful students range in age from 12 to 20. They all participate in a special education classroom, but some are general education students who act as role models, life coaches, friends, and peer tutors. The abilities of my students range from diploma bound seniors, to non-ambulatory, non-verbal, students with intellectual disabilities.
We are creating lifelong learners, who love participating in hands-on projects, that improve their lives.
They love cooking in our classroom kitchen, learning about and eating healthy foods.
My Project
We are learning about crop pollination, and rotation for sustained healthy crops in small gardens. A bee box will extend our observations, and potential for abundant crops.
Our studies are helping us see how to nurture the plants that create the food that nurture our bodies.
We have found that our two raised beds are not adequate space and we need to expand our available crop production, while allowing rotation of crops through subsequent plantings for optimal soil health.
We have created friendships with our local senior center, and want to share our produce to improve our community health, and outreach.
