This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Hurricane Katrina destroyed all of my first aid supplies needed to care for the students and teachers at Gorenflo Elementary. The school was flooded with 6 feet of water. I was praying that the flood waters would spare the unopened supplies I had just ordered for the new school year. However, my fears of losing everything was materialized upon coming to the school on Friday, September 16, 2005. Our newly built one year old school was totally destroyed. Before Hurricane Katrina, the nursing clinic consisted of two exam rooms and a nursing office area. All the students, teachers, staff and myself were so excited about our new clinic. My previous clinic areas had been in a mop closet, or main office. It felt so good just to have a designated clinic for me to administer school nursing to all who entered the clinic. Now I realized, I would have to start all over again from scratch.
It was very heartwarming to receive nursing supply donations from school nurses and school districts to get my clinic temporarily restocked for the rest of school year 2005-2006. I am at the point now of needing more supplies such as latex-free gloves, bandaids of various sizes, 2x2 and 4x4 gauze pads, alcohol swabs, q-tips, thermometers and thermometer covers, ace wraps, splinting materials, antibacterial ointment, eye wash, and other supplies to restock for this school year 2006-2007. I do not have a nursing budget to fund the needed supplies for approximately 300 returning students.
As a school nurse, my utmost goal is to provide the very best nursing care for the students, teachers and staff at my school. At the present time, I am sharing a nursing clinic in a FEMA trailer. Our projected date to return to our school is December. We are eagerly awaiting that date and the warm feeling of being back home.
