I am the school nurse for about six hundred students in an urban school that is in a Title I district. Our students are full of life and compassion at an elementary school.
Our campus services classes for students from Pre-K to fifth-grade level.
In our diverse student body, I see on average of forty-five to fifty children a day for various reasons in the clinic. We are currently in need of a new triage station for the clinic!
The clinic desk is a very important item in the clinic. This is the first contact I have with my students. It is a private area where I can talk to and assess the student's needs for being in the clinic. This is the "safe" area where a student can come and talk to me about anything such as abuse or ailments or concerns that they want to speak to me in private. This is the place where sick students come in and eat lunch or when they need close monitoring. It is an area where I can chart but have them close to observe and take vital signs. All of my student's important information is stored on my desk. I am at my desk most of the day charting all of my student's office visits to the clinic. This allows me to have the students close for monitoring and charting at the same time.
I also use my desk as a triage area to assess my student's illnesses.
I keep several emergency items on my desk (gloves, bandages, gauze, and thermometers) for quick access in a hurry. I use this area to talk to students and find out what is bothering them. A larger desk with storage will allow me to keep important paperwork and supplies close and on hand. This project contains a smaller desk to add more room for supplies as well.
The clinic desk is for the students to use while eating lunch. It is also the area that makes them feel safe and secure when they have a broken bone or severe injury.
