This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are creative, thoughtful, and full of questions! They love coming to school each day excited to learn something new. They are especially excited about learning to read on their own. Each day, my students give it their all, and if they don't get it the first time, they keep trying until they get it right. My kindergarten scholars love reading, writing, counting and just about everything that includes learning. Many of them are not quite reading on their own yet, but they are very anxious to do so. At this age, we try to instill the importance of school and learning so they will continue to be lifelong learners. Nothing touches my heart more than seeing their excitement about learning.
My Project
All of my students enjoy learning about math every day. They are always asking, “Is it time for math yet?” In kindergarten it is crucial for my students to gain a concrete understanding of number sense to lay the foundation for their future work in math. In order for my students to fully understand that numbers are not just a symbol and they have a special meaning, they need multiple opportunities to practice with numbers in varying context. Unfortunately, we do not always have access to a variety of materials to ensure this work, which is why these activities would be wonderful for my classroom.
