I am a first year teacher in first grade at a low income neighborhood school in Charlotte, North Carolina. The resource I would like for my classroom is a math library that will help introduce every major math concept taught in first grade. There are eight major concepts that are expected of first graders to have mastered by the end of the year. These major concepts are: number sense, sorting, geometry, time, counting, graphing, patterning, and measurement. As a teacher some of these concepts are challenging to introduce to our students. Many of my students do not have the prior knowledge or any real life experiences to help them relate these new concepts to. With these books, I will be able to read the story to the whole class and give all the students the same background knowledge and a base to work off of. These books are a wonderful resource to also integrate reading and math together. Many students at this young age feel that reading and math are not connected at all. They feel like numbers deal with math and letters and words deal with reading. This resource will also show students that many different subjects in school can be related and used together to help us get a better understanding of what we are learning. As a new teacher, it is very hard to buy all of these wonderful resources for my class, but with your help these books will give my students a stronger base knowledge for all the major math concepts they will need to learn all year long! Thank you for taking time and reading my proposal. My students and I look forward to using these books in our math time.
