Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a bunch of kids from the desert who love being out of their seats and in the sunshine! They find themselves in that in-between phase - not little kids anymore, but not teens, yet. They are learning who they are, what they like, what they stand for, and how to advocate for what they need.
Being a special education class, we spend a lot of our time together on a quest to discover the individual strategies that work best for each student.
They each possess a unique combination of abilities and challenges that make each day it's own adventure! The small group setting affords my students the opportunity to form strong bonds with their peers as they work together to build confidence in their math skills.
My Project
What games did you play as a child that helped you understand numbers? Growing up, I played cards, dominoes, Monopoly, Yahtzee and and endless list of other games that, when I look back I realize, laid the foundation for my success in Math class. However at the time, I thought I was just playing a game with my family.
So many of my students have never played a board or card game with a family member.
I have a goal this year to change that. I want to make building number sense more fun and less of a chore, and get them feeling more confident about working with numbers!
The students I work with, come to my class an average of three years below grade-level. That is a steep hill to climb in middle school, as the content only continues to build and get more complex. Math confidence and strong number sense are keys to every student's success!
