My students need number lines to help build number sense for success with concepts such as more and less, basic addition and subtraction, and skip counting.
Proud! That's how you feel when you've learned something new. Well, nothing (except recess) excites the Kindergarten student more than when they make connections with numbers and their world!
My students come to my Texas Kindergarten classroom from all over the world.
For most, this is their first experience with school and being away from their parents. Many have not been exposed to the english language. So, when they reach my classroom, the learning challenge ahead of them is great.
My school has much success with our students because we provide as many hands-on learning experiences for them as we can. We try and build close relationships with our students so that they are happy and comfortable to learn.
My Project
Math time in my Kindergarten classroom is active and noisy! Each lesson begins on our class carpet with counting songs and proceeds into a large group introduction of the day's concept. My students need number lines to help build number sense for success with concepts such as more and less, basic addition and subtraction, and skip counting.
The large Number Line Math Activity Chart will be a fantastic aid as students will learn as they help build a number line. This activity will reinforce number order. From there, we can discuss more than and less than, demonstrate skip counting, and addition and subtraction depending on the day's focus.
Once the students are familiar with the large number line, they will get to practice in small groups with their own Number Line Slider Boards. I will move about observing and encouraging. These will be a big hit!
Math time always ends as students work in math centers. Centers are containers filled with hands-on activities for one or two students that reinforce current and previous math learning. The Write and Wipe Student Number Lines will become a math center. Learning will be rampant!
I'm excited about this project because number lines aren't just used one time and put away until the next year.
These materials will be used from the first day of school until the last. These connections will carry my Kindergarten students through many successful years of school math.
