My Students

I’m fortunate enough to teach 8 students this year in a self-contained ESE classroom. Many of my students are sensory seeking kids and kids that need to work on gross motor skills. I saw a very cool product while searching under occupational therapy tools. It's called The Nugget. The Nugget is a system of fold-able mats that can be used in a variety of ways.

In addition to fun leisure time such as building forts, ramps and tunnels, the Nugget can be utilized to increase motor skills, improve problem solving abilities and increase cognition.

These mat sets can also soothe students who have sensory needs.

The playground is not suitable for many of my special needs students and I struggle to provide them with opportunities for playtime. I know this product will really excite them.

My Project

My vision is to put these 2 Nuggets in my special needs classroom. In this room I have dim lighting and it can be used in many ways. I have physical therapists who support my students in the classroom on skills such as standing up from a seated position. I think this would be a great tool to to help teach this skill. I also have students who have motor planning difficulties. Building things with these mats could help them to improve this area of thinking. In addition sensory seeking kids can find relief by relaxing on these mats and having a quiet moment.
