My students need the materials to learn basic computer programming skills. The Sphero and ipad are introductory programming tools while Raspberry pi is more advanced.
"The illiterate of the twenty-first century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."--Alvin Toffler
In our Makerspace students will be encouraged to learn independently through exploration, creation, success and failure.
A 6-8 grade middle school is a very active place.
Our kids are filled with energy and curiosity. They need to move so opportunities for them to learn with hands-on experiences is essential. However, they want to learn about things that are not always taught in the classroom; programming, engineering, design, etc. and many of them do not have the resources at home to foster their desire to learn. With a focus on STEM learning, our school is creating places within the building, like the library MAKERSPACE, where students can hang out and explore various activities. The MAKERSPACE will constantly evolve according to students' learning goals.
My Project
A designated area of the library will be developed for the MAKERSPACE. It is actually most of my office area. I only need a desk! In this space, students will learn programming with Sphero robots as well as create other STEM projects using materials we have on hand. Everything is based on student interest.
Students will have the opportunity to use the MAKERSPACE during study halls and after school. Students will be able to use apps to control the Sphero and develop their own apps. As they learn more about programming, they can move on to higher level programming using Raspberry pi.
These hands-on activities will introduce students to experiences they don't always get in the classroom.
Books will be available in the MAKERSPACE that illustrate how these experiences can translate into career choices. We have a set of books featuring STEM careers in fashion, cars, music, engineering and more. Many times, activities like this are what will motivate lower-achieving students to pursue a career they didn't consider previously.
