My students are enthusiastic learners who try their best to learn to read, write reports, and collect science data. In addition, they are learning the importance of working in a group and cooperating in their learning experiences. Sixty-one percent of students at our school receive free and/or reduced lunch services.
The majority of my students are either students from families struggling financially or English Language Learners, who are primarily resettled refugees who came from refugee camps that had sometimes insufficient--or sometimes no--resources to educate students.
My Project
To teach young learners who come from families struggling financially and from families of new refugee children exposed to English for possibly the first time in their lives, I have to use concrete examples of new concepts in order for them to grasp their new learning. It is imperative that these students "catch up" with their peers by experiencing the background knowledge they require.
Children often respond better when they can focus as a group on a story or a learning project we are doing together.
The book collection in our school is limited and a document camera allows all the children to share in the colorful illustrations and discuss the subject matter together. When we learn as a group, students encourage each other to learn more.
I also use a document camera to give the students examples of writing structures including opinion pieces, poetry, story writing, and science notebooks to record scientific data. Whenever students can see an example of what I am requiring them to do, they feel more confident to jump into the new learning experience. The document camera will allow us to write together and learn to edit our writing as part of the process.
