My Students

Our school is in its sixth operating school year and I have loved working with all of the children who need specialized help with their communication skills. Our school houses Kindergarten through 6th grades and a special needs preschool. We have a wonderful faculty and there is a genuine spirit of collaboration and support among the general education teachers, special education teachers, and administrators.

My students have a variety of communication difficulties which require the help of a speech-language pathologist.

I help my students learn new words and learn how to use their new words in different contexts. If students are unable to use oral language, I might teach sign language or how to use a communication device. With some students, I work on retelling stories with the important story components, using correct subject-verb agreement, formulating complex sentences, and even social language skills.

My students are all hard workers, and I really enjoy seeing them increase their ability to communicate with their teachers, peers, and families!

My Project

My students need help with their social communication and story telling skills and have loved using the Story Champs and Social Thinking curriculums over the past 4 years. I'd love to expand my materials within those curriculums in order to encourage more engagement from my students and to take their story telling and social communication skills to the next level. More stories from the Story Champs curriculum will help my students use their retelling skills with new material and will target higher order language skills like subject-verb agreement and complex sentence structures. The Should I or Shouldn't I game series is a fun way for students to consider all of the social "clues" and cues in a hypothetical social communication situation and discuss the best solutions in a fun way. I feel like nothing is more important than helping my students communicate better and connect with their peers, teachers, and family members!
