My students need headphones in the computer learning lab, so they can hear, see, read and interact with the course curriculum to complete recovering a failed course.

Did you ever need to go to summer school to keep from being one credit short of getting promoted from one grade to another? Our students have a chance to recover credits in a remedial course recovery program through a computer learning center. We offer math, English, science, etc. all in one lab.
Not all students learn at the same pace as the rest of a grade level classroom.
However, students who are willing to make the extra effort can regain a lost credit through our remedial learning lab programs called Novell Stars. We are also able to offer distance learning opportunities with colleges and technical schools over the Internet for students who want to take additional classes our school can not offer on site. This school year more than a hundred students per semester were able to take advantage of these opportunities. The lab is staffed with a full time teacher for support and additional teachers are on call in subject areas. No student wants to be retained in a grade. The chance to review course material already presented in a teacher's classroom and complete required testing prior to the next school year is an essential part of making sure students don't become frustrated with failure. Also, in a small school system learning labs are an outstanding tool for high achievers.
By using headphones in the learning labs we can provide an opportunity for students to add another sensory input to receiving information. However, inexpensive headphones take a beating because the number of different students using each set daily causes cords to get damaged, headsets to get dropped and earbuds to wear out. We don't want to require students to provide their own headphones because it's just one more hurdle for a struggling student to overcome. Some students are visual learners and some need to hear and see the material at the same time. Poor reading skills are improved by seeing and hearing words at the same time. It also means you can have Algebra students sitting next to English students in the same class period. We offer lab courses during the regular school day as well and one session after school four days per week. Students work at their own pace within a specified time frame and are monitored and tested in small increments. Student answers get immediate feedback.
These headphones make our learning lab as effective as possible for the students by using all the senses.
Headphones are a familiar and normal part of teenage life. If you want the kids to try to work harder we have to make it something they want to do! In the current economic situation labs maximize the remedial chances and make sure our "fast track" students get the courses other larger systems offer. It means we are using one more tool to make sure "No child is left behind!"
