My Students
My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. About one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunches and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their excitement for learning, especially if you incorporate things they like doing.
They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences.
The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times and we have to constantly look for ways to not only keep students engaged, but also build their skills to prepare for potential future careers. We know that the future will require critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but it also requires a stronger background and understanding of science and technology. My students love hands-on learning.
My Project
Our bus loop garden has grown so much but we don't have any place to sit, Student engangement has increased and so many want to have gloves and something to do.
We only have one watering can and these benches convert to a work table which is really cool.
They will give us a place to work, to even eat and then when the work is done or we need a break, a nice place to sit.
Our Garden club has grown, doubled in size and there are not enough garden gloves to go around. This project will give us additional gloves for those who want them and cut down on the fussing and the race to the shed to get them.
Between the courtard and bus loop garden we currently only have 1 watering can to be used with the rain barrels. This will give us two in each location and help get more "jobs" established to keep everyone happy. They are so eager to work.
