My Students

My students are sixth graders in a multicultural urban community. We have an extremely limited budget with minimal support from our local government to fund basic supplies.

These students love their neighborhood school because it creates a sense of community.

This is especially important because many of the students come from broken homes. They are excited to learn, but often times do not have access to the same materials that other students have from surrounding districts which leaves them at a disadvantage.

My Project

Many of the books we have for a grade level are worn down, hard to relate to, and outdated for our current students. After much discussion and input, we've decided to invest in a grade level set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for both the timelessness of the story and the ability for students to connect to a multitude of varied characters.

Many of us also found a continued love of reading through the Harry Potter series, and we hope to impart this on our kids who are struggling to find the magic of reading and stories.

We trust this story to create safe spaces to discuss big life realities and smaller social issues we faced as children.
