As the 7th grade reading teacher, I encounter two very different kinds of students. Those who have books at home and are strong readers. And then those who don't have books at all. For those students, the world is passing them buy, they are disadvantaged just for not having the tools.
Many of my students come from broken homes.
They struggle to make ends meet, and education is often not the main focus. While some of my students come from stable families that encourage good study skills, all of these students do well and produce good quality work.
With the current COVID-19 situation, as a teacher, we are being asked to step up in a whole new way. Teaching online and in classrooms will be challenging. Keeping my students safe while continuing my curriculum is proving to be a little more expensive than normal.
I believe in putting fine literature in the hands of my students. I always teach novels. Young people need to read a book from beginning to end and discover fine literature.
With COVID-19 this year we are required to provide each child a book.
Since I have been using one classroom set, I'm about 30 books short this year. This project will allow me to continue to provide the youth with the joy of reading. Your help will put a book in each child's hand. Thank you in advance for supporting teachers everywhere.
