My students need a class set of novels. Many of my students do not read on their own so their only exposure to literature is in class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My day starts with the challenge of motivating students who have not been successful in our education system. Many have a negative view towards education and society. A large amount of my time is dedicated to teaching them how to cope and supporting them with the uphill battle to graduate.
Any student that causes problems at their home school or who is being released from juvenile hall ends up on our doorstep.
They need a second chance and often a third. My students are English language learners, Special Ed, credit deficient and about 85% socio-economically disadvantaged. They need our school for support, we are often the only place they get it. We do not receive enough funding for the projects we want to do with our students and we can not rely on the home to provide for things as simple as pencils and paper. I try to engage my students in project-based learning and expose them to literature that I believe to be life-altering. Your donations help with this.
My Project
Most of my students do not read on their own. Some have never read a novel on their own. Many are reading at far below grade level. I believe that literacy is very important to our youth. School is the place that they are exposed to literature. I do not have access to class sets for my class to use during the school year.
My goal is to acquire a collection of class sets so that I can rotate novels throughout the year(s) in order to supplement our project-based learning with literature.
At the moment I have two class sets of books and my students enjoy reading them. However, I am unable to provide diverse choices or let students borrow books to take home and read on their own. My hope is that I will have enough books for all students and possibly have a few that can be checked out for makeup work or independent work.
I believe that literature helps students in many ways. They are often reluctant at first to engage in such a rigorous and time-consuming activity. However, over time they start to see the benefits of reading a quality book. From the life lessons to the creativity, students are able to temporarily assume another person's perspective. This is vital for my students because they often only know what they have experienced, where they are from.
