My students need novels for our book-sharing unit, including titles from "Island of the Blue Dolphins", to "Little Women" in addition to two sets of the game "Boggle."
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students WANT to be better readers, the problem is, they don't know how. Please don't get me wrong -- they can all read. The books they choose to read for pleasure tend to be pre-teen fluff.
I teach in a high-need neighborhood and many of my students are not encouraged to read at home or are not engaged in any sort of family-reading routine. They are now in Middle School and have a hard time understanding how to choose books that will challenge them appropriately.
When I think of the books I know to be important from elementary school such as "The Outsiders" and "Little Women", I realize that current New York City curriculum fails to require these important classic novels that include moral lessons.
My hope is to give each child a book of his or her own that I self-selected just for them, based on what I know about their reading preferences. I hope to inspire them to read classic novels and experience the joy of journeying through a novel that lives outside their "normal" book choice.
I plan to work with each of my ten students by conferencing with them to be sure they're understanding their novel. As they're reading their novels independently, we will have daily class updates from 3 or 4 students to give "teasers" about their book to their classmates. (We have already begun book clubs in my class, so they are hooked on discussing novels.) I will encourage a book-swap within the class, where students learn the joy of sharing books.
My students also love to have spelling bees and challenges in class, so I am also requesting the game "Boggle" as a way to add a fun game element to improving their spelling and phonemic awareness.
With your donation, you will help me spark an interest in reading within my students and generate dialog about why certain books become classics. I will also be able to share some of my favorite titles with my students in a very personal way -- through a gift.
