My Students

My students are some of the best 7th-grade students in the world. My school serves around 1,300 students and I teach English Language Arts to 240 of them. I also teach all students in the 7th grade who have Reading and Writing IEPs. These students with special needs are some of the most incredible students I have ever had. I have witnessed in both my regular and special education classroom students strive, study, and succeed.

My students may come from a demographically homogeneous pool, but they are each so unique, special, and individual.

They each have such different skills and talents and I want to do all I can to best serve each one of them. Sometimes, this feels close to impossible because there are so many, but it is my mission to strive for the learning of each and every student.

My Project

Diverse literature in classroom libraries is of the utmost importance. An incredible thing about books is that they function as mirrors and sliding glass doors. It's necessary for students to see themselves reflected in stories that they read, but it's also so important for them to use the story as a lens to see what other people go through, and maybe step across the barrier into a more empathetic world. This is particularly important during this time of upheaval brought on by the pandemic and other events. Having access to this kind of literature will have a profound impact on students' emotional and mental well-being. This is why I've chosen the variety of novels that I have. However, I don't think that it's just novels that are beneficial.

Students in middle school learn from a variety of diverse literature, whether they be picture books or above-level novels.

I've chosen a variety of diverse picture books in this DonorsChoose request as well. I have several different units that I teach that involve using picture books in addition to novels. For example, picture books are a great resource when teaching elements of fiction such as plot and theme. They're also helpful when teaching critical reading skills and looking beyond essays as a traditional form of text. But I don't always want to use classic picture books to achieve this end - I think it's valuable to use diverse picture books that give students the experience to, once again, either see themselves reflected in literature or head into another world. And using real, tangible books brings a level of comfort missing from this COVID-19 pandemic-ridden world.

These diverse literature choices will be so valuable in educating and entertaining my students. Please consider donating!
