My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. They include new Americans, highly motivated learners and many students who struggle with engaging with school. My goal is to foster a love of language learning, build excitement to learn more about other cultures and seek a deeper understanding of their lives and those outside the US.

The greater majority of my students want to learn Spanish, but have not always found success.

Some lack basic school readiness skills, some have very demanding lives out of school, and some just cannot connect to textbook learning.

My Project

My students are tired of the synthetic syllabus and tired old textbooks. The research is clear. Reading is the quickest and most motivating path to successful language acquisition in any language. Students have frequent contact with comprehensible input, vocabulary, and it is motivating.

Students feel good about themselves when they can read a real book in Spanish.

I want to incorporate more Free Voluntary Reading in our curriculum, but I need more texts to do so. I currently only have a few sets of books that are highly requested, but not enough for 125 students. We would appreciate more choice and more copies so that everyone can have a chance to read in Spanish!
