Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Gifted and Talented students in the fourth grade. I LOVE teaching novel units and whenever I hear of a great novel, I read the book to see if it would be something my students would be interested in. A fellow college friend told me about a novel entitled "The Cricket In Times Square." She said she read the book to her sixth grade class at a previous school. I read the novel and there is so much extra "stuff" that we can do with the book! It's about a cricket who travels to New York City. He sees all kinds of sights, landmarks that New York is famous for. For example, the cricket travels to Chinatown and I thought that I would bring in some green tea and authentic Chinese food for my kids to try. The students in my district do not have the means to travel, in fact most them have never been outside of our county! I would love for them to experience things they could not experience in a small town. I am requesting a class set of "The Cricket in Times Square" as well as planning guides to create an exciting novel unit that will enable my students to gain new experiences. This novel unit will not benefit my current class, but it will be used in all of my future classes.
