My students primarily come from an underprivileged population in an urban environment. Many of my students do not have the resources at home to maximize their learning potential. It is my goal, then, to provide them with the best tools and resources possible for the time that they are in my classroom.
I believe that every one of my students can be college-bound, despite the fact that many of them come from families where this has not been a reality.
In order to achieve this goal, my students will need a variety of tools to meet their needs as individual learners.
My students have been completing novel studies this year and it is a part of our day that we genuinely look forward to. However, our building only has so many class sets of books and being in our third round this year, all of our remaining choices are either books the students read last year or are not grade level appropriate.
Several of my students are interested in reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham as our next novel study because the story is partially set right in Flint, Michigan!
They are eager to read a story about kids in the past living where they live now. I know that this book will lead to some excellent discussion opportunities.
