I teach two classes of 25 brilliant students in southwest Texas that come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have 3 - 4 generations that have grown up in the area and some are new to the area due to their parents seeking a better life in the United States. Some have families that have a long line of college graduates while others have parents that can barely write their name. Yet, through all these differences in backgrounds, our love for reading and thirst for knowledge is the same. My students get excited about the books and tales we share in our classroom. They build each other up and encourage one another each day.
Our area suffered horrific loss from Hurricane Harvey last year and many families are still rebuilding along with many teachers and area schools.
Even with all of the challenges our community has faced, my students still come to school every day with a smile on their face and kindness in their hearts.
My Project
In our classroom, we read, read, and read some more. I strive to engage my students daily in wonderful novels and series which help them to become hooked on characters, experience emotions, and thrive on suspense. I use novel studies in a variety of ways to do this.
The novels we read along with their characters help us to build community and establish a growth mindset.
They are left in suspense at the end of almost every chapter and are eager to learn about our next adventure.
By helping supply novels for my classroom you are helping build better readers with not only titles that they can connect with, but with books that are of high interest. When you see students enjoy books like this and ask to take them home so that they can read ahead, you know you are doing the right thing!
