My students need books for a novel study of "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.L. Konigsburg, with a teacher guide and a pack of worksheets.
Literary junk food is fun, but let's check out work that won the Newbery Award. Who knows? One of these talented kids could be a future writer. We spend a lot of time developing writing skills, and I have found that the best way to learn to write is to read great literature.
My students will have just been identified as intellectually gifted.
This is their first chance to encounter work that goes beyond the third grade level in a class filled with students who all have special abilities. I want their introduction into the gifted classroom to be memorable with a novel that will get them charged and keep them motivated to learn. Unfortunately, many gifted students do not reach their full potential, yet these are the kids who hold the promise to lead the next generation.
My Project
In the novel, "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler," Claudia and Jamie run away from home and wind up living at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There they are privy to the introduction of a new statue and immediately are suspicious of its authenticity. Rewards for this book include 1968 Newbery Medal; Library of Congress Children's Book of the Year; ALA Notable Children's Book.
Student imaginations will be stretched as they decide what they would do in Claudia and Jamie's situation and predict what could happen next.
This project is important because gifted children have the potential to accomplish great tasks provided that we nurture their talents.
I hope that one day, each of my students will hold advanced degrees and better the world.
