Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This will be my first year teaching 6th grade. For three years I taught 5th grade and last year I taught 4-6th computer literacy skills. I want to start my first year with 6th graders strong with as much literature I can expose them too as possible.
Many of our students experience trauma at home.
However, my students come to school with an enthusiasm for learning. The teachers at my school are devoted to addressing student needs. We are trained in the curriculum to help support our second language learners to succeed. My students are exceptional in their ability to overcome. They have made great progress in their reading, and many of those students who had come to me and sworn off reading are now the ones secretly reading under their desk when they are not supposed to. Many of them are motivated readers but lack a choice in what they read, as many of them do not have books at home and as a class, we only visit the library once a week. In fifth grade, it is crucial to encourage students a love of reading so that they may succeed.
My Project
Many of my students do not have books of their own at home. Many also did not grow up in a situation where they were read to constantly. I want to foster a love of reading for them by allowing us as a class to read wonderful literature together. Restart is a great novel about bullying and forgiveness. Esperanza Rising is a historical fiction story of perseverance with a female lead. Bud Not Buddy is a classic story of a boy trying to find his dad. These novels also act as material for us to address the common core standards in an exciting way.
