Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students bring a wide range of home culture experiences into the classroom. Every individual fills our shared learning environment with energy and excitement!
Because my students come from a diverse variety of cultural, socioeconomic, and home language backgrounds, they learn about one another and the way others live every day.
We continuously work to maintain a community where everyone feels safe, included, and happy. It is important that my students feel comfortable to express themselves, any way they identify. We need materials that support these interest.
My Project
This is part two of my project. I just found out that I will be teaching 40 my school remote 5th graders. So I am requesting another class set of an amazing book by Katherine Applegate titled, The One and Only Ivan and a small group set of the books by Andrew Clements, Lunch Money. The One and Only Ivan is an incredible story about a Gorilla who must face danger and loneliness and become the protector of an unlikely friend. Lunch Money is a financial literacy story that takes a twelve year old into the stock market. Both novel studies will give my students a chance to read an extremely high interest novel together, while analyzing the development of characters over time, examining plot conflicts, and using the story as a mentor text for their own writing.
