Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember falling in love with a book as a child? My 6th grade students love to read and want to read more novels of various genres. They especially love Fantasy and Realistic fiction that allows them to see how people have come up against challenges in life and prevailed. We recently read Number the Stars as a class- all 84 students had a copy of the book. The discussion among all students throughout the 6th grade was great and we were able get students involved in reading additional novels set during the WWII historical time.

Students at UME Prep are curious and love to learn about other people and are always asking to read novels in class and have a more "book club" feel to their Reading Language Arts class.

Help our students continue to fall in love and have an authentic reading experience with class sets of novels. These books will be used over and over again through they years and will be a tradition in the 6th grade curriculum.

My Project

This class set of novels will help me to create a literacy rich environment in our 6th grade ELA class. Books can serve as loyal companions for 6th graders and help them get through life with self awareness that they are not alone.

Reading novels provided students with insights and knowledge that they can take away and examine with other readers.

Reading novels of different genres is important- teachers never know when a nonreader will suddenly fall in love with a certain type of genre and become a lifelong reader.
