Novel Reading: Their Eyes were Watching God by Z.N. Hurston

My students need 30 copies of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes were Watching God and worksheets to check their comprehension of the novel.

My Students

The oral history of minority groups is in many ways, tied to my students' preference to tell rather than read and write stories. Unlike myself, they've never had anyone to read to them as children. In return, they are afraid to write and to read. When they do, they want to relate to the text.

My school's cadets come from various neighborhoods in our city.

Either they or their parents have chosen our school for its JROTC program that teaches discipline and leadership skills. The school is one of few public military schools. Our children come from latchkey and broken homes. Many of them are being raised by single parents or guardians. Despite the many disparities in their lives, they are very intelligent and must be reminded of their strengths. However, a large number of students I've taught do not like to read or write. During the end of year state testing, many of them pass the reading comprehension test. However, the scores mostly rate as pass/proficient. It is my goal to have more students earning advanced scores. In addition, I want them to understand what they read.

My Project

The majority of my students are African American. Historically, their culture(s) involves the passing down of stories orally. Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston was a storyteller who wrote stories based on what she observed as a child. I want my students to examine the ways in which the novel's protagonist, Janie shares her stories on relationships gone wrong, parenting, and more. During the reading and discussion, students will share stories they've heard from others as well as their own both written and aloud. Students will tell where the stories come from. They will identify sources such as family, childhood, and more. We will also examine language and dialect. Many of my students use tech savvy language or Ebonics. We will translate the dialect in the novel into their own dialect as well as Standard English.

In the past I've taught F.

Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Unfortunately, many of my students cannot identify with the characters in the text. Still I encourage them to open up to new things. However, for the purpose of increasing their reading interest, I believe Hurston's text will be more beneficial. Also, it involves themes my students can relate to such as love, race, and class.
