My Students

My Fgraders are unique, inquisitive, and persistent. They enjoy activities (in any subject area) that allow them to use multiple learning modalities to create their finished product. While some of my students prefer to demonstrate subject-matter knowledge through essays or written response, others shine best when they are able to demonstrate and create through visual or performing arts.

I encourage my students to take ownership of many of their final projects or assignments; motivating them to apply their knowledge in both inventive and distinctive ways.

My students come from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds; thus, it is imperative for me to create an environment where all my students can successfully access and meet (or surpass) the grade-level standards.

My Project

In order to motivate my students to read, I share novels in every genre in the form of a guided read aloud. The novel, A Wrinkle in Time, is a fantastic science fiction/fantasy novel that explores theme and conflict in a meaningful and engaging manner.

In order to share this novel with my class, I must acquire 21 additional copies so each of my students will have his or her own personal copy to annotate (with Post-it notes of course!).

Motivation to read is key to teaching students to read to learn. Fifth grade students must read for longer periods of time in order to achieve reading endurance. Many students benefit from the modeling and scaffolding these read aloud opportunities provide.
