Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyone at our school knows these two students by name for the love and good humor they share so easily.
Living with autism, ADHD, and hearing impairment, they present special challenges in a school that serves predominantly low-income households.
One student, the moment you meet her, will eagerly invite you to meet the furby that she brings to school each day cradled in her arm. She is a prolific artist with an eye for detail, creating from paper dozens of readymade furbies and hatchimals during her break times.
Another student is ever the social butterfly, saying 'hi' to her friends from Pre-K to 8th grade that she passes in the halls, and telling teachers about the good times she has had with her aunts and uncles. She is one of two in her household with nearly the same hearing impairment and cognitive delays.
My Project
Meal times can be a special challenge. With the noise, commotion, the limited time, and selective eating disorder, most days their plates are barely touched.
If you saw how little they managed to eat at breakfast and lunch, you would not be surprised if their morale began to sink in the classroom.
While our staff has an abundance of patience we are always in need of their preferred foods. Both students come from low-income households and disabilities alone create enormous expense for the families. With your help, we will be able to provide healthy snacks, like crackers and juice, so the students can focus on their learning.
