There is a wide range of girls who attend Girls Empowerment Club at RMS. Mondays after school, my classroom becomes a space for discussing issues that affect girls and women in 2018, eliciting different perspectives and providing support for all who participate. Together we play music, write poetry, and create art. Our club grows larger every week. Students with diverse backgrounds enter hoping to explore their interests, tell their story, explore the dynamics of identity, and find friendship. The one thing we all have in common for certain is the absolute need for snacks! Eating together after a long day at school is an essential energy boosting part of the Girls Empowerment Club experience. Please consider helping meet the basic needs of our young girls!
My Project
The Roosevelt Middle School Girls Empowerment Club meets every Monday after school. We build community, host meaningful discussions, and validate each others interests and experiences. We've covered a wide range of topics chosen by the students and plan to host members in the community interested in facilitating herbal medicine, writing, and music workshops. Our hope is to show our students that their potential is limitless.
We've taught our students that both the mind and body need nourishment.
After a long day in school, we would like to provide snacks in return for participating in compassionate dialogue and having an interest in self expression. Unfortunately, as this student-led program begins to grow, our ability to provide for these needs remains limited.
Our goal for this program is for students to create a Girls Empowerment zine that can be published and distributed to the larger Oakland community. We hope that eventually our dialogue will reach girls across the Bay Area. Our members are hungry for truth, knowledge and, of course, snacks. Please consider supporting the nourishment of their young minds!
