My Students

As a school of choice, my students and their families care deeply about education. As a Title I school, my students and their families often lack the resources that could help them succeed.

At our school, forty percent of the students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch, but one hundred percent of our students are eager to meet the challenges of a rigorous and engaging curriculum.

Because of our demographics, many of our students lack essential materials at home and only have access to them in the classroom.

My Project

Energy and matter cycling are essential parts of the 8th grade science curriculum. Aquaponics systems will show how both matter and energy are transformed to grow both plants and fish.

Students will use the aquaponics system to understand the carbon cycle and nitrogen cycle in a hands-on and experimental way.

Students will learn about the nitrogen cycle as they monitor nitrogen levels in the water. Students will answer questions and gain an understanding of the carbon cycle as plants grow without soil.

With two systems, students can compare nutrient and waste levels between tanks in a variety of conditions. Plants can be grown with or without fish, and the growth of the plants can be compared. Fish can be raised with or without plants, and nitrate, and nitrite levels can be compared. Overall, this project will really help students approach multiple difficult and abstract concepts in a meaningful way.
