Help me give my students a learning environment that is adapted to their needs. My students need comfortable areas where they can learn, along with the ability to move while they work.
My students are special because many of them speak more than one language and for almost all of them, English is their second language. Working with an ESL population, in a community that is mostly Arab, I have the pleasure to be surrounded by diversity and rich culture.
About half of my students are reading and writing at grade level, but the other half fall far behind because of the language barrier and other economic difficulties.
My students have a passion for learning and come to me every day with excitement. Many of my students though, struggle in many ways. My class is not only diverse in their race, religion, and economic status, but also in their abilities to learn. My students range from students with speech and language impairments to emotionally impaired to cognitively impaired to students with ADD and ADHD to students who are learning the English language as a second language. I am so proud to support them through their struggles because everyday they show up and show me their GRIT. It is my job to prepare them for success, but I need a little help!
My Project
Flexible seating is proven to be beneficial for all types of learners. When students are not able to move about the room throughout the day, their focus and motivation is lowered. Noticeably, when students can choose where to sit and read or do classwork their engagement and productivity increase! Each year, more and more of my students struggle with attention, hyperactivity, and learning disabilities. They need constant movement in a more comfortable learning environment. These comfy floor seats, wobble cushions, balance balls, and pillows would give them the ability to sit where they'd like and motivate them to focus more and work harder and more independently.
