My students need more frequent ease of access to computers to improve their reading skills, build math fluency, write for real world purposes and refine their research skills.
My students are a fabulous group of 8-9 years old that make me laugh every day. They are eager to learn and love taking on new challenges. Our school has almost 900 students representing cultures from around the world. In fact, just my class represents seven different cultures and languages spoken. Our school is situated in a middle to low income neighborhood with 35% of my class considered to be in the low socio-economic range and bussed into the neighborhood from a high poverty satellite area.
One of the qualities I love about my class is their kind, caring natures.
They are very aware of their surroundings and ensure everyone feels a part of the group. Everyday we greet each other in the morning and give "high five's---goodbye!" as we exit the classroom each afternoon. They are a bundle of fun energy and we all look forward to coming together each day.
My Project
I have the responsibility and challenge to mesh my students' love of tech with the academics. Our class needs additional computers for them to practice, enhance and perfect basic skills across all content areas.
6:1 student computer ratio!
That's what it's like in our class now, which means it takes six times as long for my students to complete research, develop fluency with their math facts, extend their learning about science concepts, compose works of fiction or even for those students without access to technology at home...just to learn the keyboard and how to complete basic tasks on a computer.
Additional computers will also allow my students to learn with others outside our classroom, work on collaborative documents and become proficient with word processing and digital presentation software...all real-world skills that help students create ties between school and the world around them.
