This year I am moving from K to 1st grade. I'm thrilled with this new adventure, but I am missing important materials. Obtaining Scholastic News will help me greatly! They'll be used regularly for small group instruction and independent reading. Plus the kids will learn about the world they live in!
My classroom is made up of 22 fabulous first graders!
We have a wonderful blend of funny, quirky, serious, and playful. The school I work in is amazing and growing everyday. I teach with some amazing educators who I am honored and blessed to call my friends. This year we are implementing a lot of new things which I think will help each and every one of us improve our craft and improve student engagement and achievement. It's going to be awesome year!
My Project
I envision the kids using the Scholastic News magazines during MIRP (monitored independent reading practice) time, in a small group guided reading setting, and in conjunction with our science and/or social studies units. The issues also contain activities for the students to complete. For example, the children will read a graph and answer questions about it. I can use this to check for understanding and plan reteach or intervention lessons if needed.
I think this project will make a difference by exposing my students to nonfiction text in a fun, new way.
Nearly all of the nonfiction materials I have are well above my first graders' reading level, so to get the information they must get it from me. By getting and incorporating Scholastic News into my reading instruction, the students will be able to access the information independently or with the help of their peers.
