"If you are not willing to learn no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." I tell my students often that their education is the only thing that can never be taken away from them. We focus on bettering ourselves to have a brighter future each and every day. We continually focus on having GRIT and maintaining a growth mindset.
Our students are diverse.
In the nation's oldest city we have a wonderfully diverse student population. In my classroom, I see students from all different backgrounds at varying ability levels. In addition to serving students that are dealing with some difficult issues at home, many of our students also struggle with learning disabilities or emotional-behavioral disorders. This doesn't mean that our students lack motivation. We have many students taking college-level classes at an early age and are extremely driven to succeed. We strive to meet the needs of each individual child and raise them up to meet goals they never thought were possible.
My Project
In today's world of technology, it is vital that classrooms are equipped with devices to provide students with opportunities to improve not only their technological skills, but their writing and research skills as well. In addition, employers are looking more and more for candidates who are capable of working on a team. I plan to use Google Docs and Google Slides in our classroom this year to help students grow in all critical areas. Google Docs allows one or more students to collaborate simultaneously on the same document. This allows for real-time feedback and editing to take place on a daily basis. Also, Google Slides serves as a great resource for projects and helping students develop their presentation skills.
"Developing the ability to learn independently, collaborate with peers to accomplish work, and communicate the conclusions of your work are the core of 21st century skills, and a highly valued set of competencies in the world outside of school (Rockman, 2003).
To prepare students for the technological demands of college and careers, I am asking for a class set (25) of Chromebooks. Because we will be storing our projects and assignments either on our Google Drives or in our learning management system Schoology, these devices are perfect for our classroom. Having these devices in class will allow students to not only participate in more interactive lessons, the devices will also allow students the opportunity to create documents and presentations of their own. Students who use computers have been shown to attend school more steadily and perform better than students who do not use computers. Along with getting higher grades on exams, students also stated they felt more involved with their lessons and work if they used a computer.
