My Students
I teach in a low-income, urban school where there is a great deal of international presence. My students are very interested in the history and circumstances in which they or their ancestors came to be a part of our community and learn about issues such as environmental justice, poverty, and violence that impact populations around the world.
Unfortunately, most of them do not have the financial ability to travel internationally, so I would like to bring international experiences to them.
In doing this, they will gain a better understanding of the world around them and become better global citizens.
My Project
Malala's inspirational story of her fight for girl's rights to education is too often glossed over and not fully understood. My new, never-previously-taught class focuses on the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals that were created to foster a more equitable global society. Goal #4 of the 17 is access to a quality education.
I will use these books to help students dive into Malala's world and help them understand how kids around the world are fighting so hard for the education that American students take for granted.
We will look at different educational systems around the world and see how they compare with the American system. We will also look at the advances in girls' education that have occurred since Malala's attack and address how there are challenges to Malala's message.
