Help me give my students more seating options within our centers to maximize their learning experience in our classroom and enrich their literacy skills in our library through providing an Easy-Clean Comfy Couch.
My co-teacher and I are working in a blended classroom and serving two half-day groups of prekindergarten in an elementary school on the Northside of Chicago. Our students are between the ages of three and five.
Because this is a blended room, this means we have a mixture of children with many different needs and skillsets.
Our students love our circle time on the carpet where we explore our questions for our units. Our students also love looking at books in our library with reading buddies that they sit with.
To help accommodate our young students that are just starting their education journeys as best as we can, we would love to have some flexible seating in our room to assist our students in both classes with being comfortable in their learning and growing their love of literacy.
My Project
Our students absolutely love sitting on the couch that we have in our library center, but it only fits two students comfortably (despite the attempts that have been made to accommodate three at a time). Adding a second couch to our library center will help our students find seating options that can allow them to read to their reading buddies and not feel so cramped. We also believe that providing the students with more seating options will help renew their excitement about coming to the library and exposing them to different types of literature.
In a blended classroom, students come with varying abilities, thus meaning that they require differentiated instruction.
They also benefit greatly from differentiated seating. With the use of the beanbag chair and the flex space floor seat, these students will become more involved in the classroom because they will feel less restricted in their seating.
