Not Just Capable But Confident Readers

My students need new books, like a set of Around the World books and a set of Dr. Jean Science books, that they can relate to in their own lives and also take them to places in their imagination they have never been to before.

My Students

It only takes one great book to reach the reluctant reader. I need that book! Help me share the magic of reading with my first graders. With a combination of both non-fiction and fiction books, my students can go to places in their imaginations they may never have access to.

My students are a wonderful and enthusiastic group of first grade learners at an International Baccalaureate public magnet school.

My students come from a wide range of cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds. I have both advanced learners and special needs students in my classroom. All of my students look forward to coming to school to learn, and they especially love delving into the classroom library to discover new books.

My Project

Our classroom library is well loved. The students engage in buddy reading and independent reading everyday, and they take books home to practice reading with their families. As a result, books wear out and need to be replaced over time. I am requesting a range of reading material to meet the needs of the different reading abilities and interests in my classroom. I am asking for books that provide memories to students of small moments that may occur in their own lives. Books with topics on manners, the night before summer vacation, a boy who is always picked last, and other literature that they can relate to that reminds them of fond memories of growing up like Mother Goose and other popular titles. Books such as these will give my students access to quality literature at their reading levels. By allowing them to read these books themselves, under my guidance, they will be able to practice other reading skills such as reading comprehension, fluency, and reading with expression.

Students at this age are constantly seeking ways to connect to others and make sense of their world.

By funding this project you can provide new opportunities for children to make connections through quality literature. Your generosity will improve our classroom library and give my first graders some fun and interesting new books to read! Reading is a huge part of our school day and we would greatly appreciate your help in providing new books for my students to read.
