This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some need extra help after school, and some are more than willing to go get extra resources just to have more fun in the classroom. These projects add a significant hands-on portion to my classes. They also extend students' ability to carry their learning beyond the classroom and perhaps develop an interest they never knew they had.
Students who have more resources have more choices, and therefore more chances to find something they like doing and something they excel at doing.
When you have activities that are out of the ordinary, students appreciate it and remember it.
My Project
Even though it may have already been a year since the hurricane, in this case Hurricane Harvey still lingers. This area has endured consecutive years of flooding due to many factors. A new set of clubs with many other ideas are a part of revitalization after the storm. We will offer in our chess club three levels for a K-12 small school district. However, training all the students involves cross-training. We are including games like Axis and Allies, Risk, Othello, and Connect 4. These games are similar to chess in that they teach basic strategy. This ensures that students receive a more complete training before they make the commitment to play chess competitively. No student will be required to play in competition. However, they will have the full support of the school to pursue these endeavors.
Using alternative strategic games helps develop a player's mind to always think ahead when managing the game play.
Often times, players think one move or maybe two moves ahead. We will take our competition level abilities to thinking out whole games before they are played.
