My students come to school every day excited and ready to learn! They are eager to learn and try new things. I want them to know that I believe in them and they can do anything! I teach at a Title 1, pre-k through 2nd-grade school in inner-city Ohio where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of the students are living at or below the poverty line. My students are creative, caring, and very energetic. Our classroom is a hands-on learning community. I work with children who are four and five-year-olds.
Their ability to love learning excites me to find new and exciting ways to teach things to them.
They love to learn about new things. They love to look up information online together and will ask many questions to learn as much as they can.
My Project
My students have an interest in insects, but unfortunately, in Ohio, we only get to see the adult stage of an insect. My students want to see how the tiny egg that the caterpillar lays on the leaf in the Hungry Caterpillar book becomes a beautiful butterfly. Even the book Are You a Ladybug? documents the life cycle of a ladybug from egg to adult, with great pictures but my students want the full-blown hands-on experience, where they can document each stage. We are also asking for plastic models to document if our live eggs and insects follow correct stage format.
The students will be able to compare and contrast the life cycles of the praying mantis, ladybug, painted lady butterfly, beetle, and an ant.
This project will help develop my students' curiosity, understand how an egg has multiple possibilities to be something new, foster innovation, and help my students strengthen their teamwork. We can't wait to learn how an icky insect can become a beautiful creation.
