Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are extremely amazing and love learning! They come from Spanish and non Spanish spoken homes and are learning to adapt to new topics very quickly! Their excitement to learn a new language makes it even more exciting for me to teach. Due to their socioeconomic status (90% come from low socioeconomic homes) and language, my students do not have the opportunity to experience materials that enhance all academic areas. After Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, many of them got displaced and are still out of their homes.
My students come in to class so excited to see what activities and they are going to use to learn Spanish despite their devastating Hurricane Harvey catastrophe.
Their shining faces are always eager to learn. I work in a Title I school, and funds are not always available to buy resources especially after being hit by the Hurricane Harvey disaster.
My Project
The materials will make a positive impact in the lives of my students for several reasons. After losing most of their belongings, it was difficult for my students to return back to school after Hurricane Harvey. Many did not just lose their clothes and homes, but even their toys.
Even though toys are material items, the outdoor equipment I am requesting, jump ropes, balls, and a parachute will allow them to have fun during recess time.
Due to our busy schedules, we have 5 classes outside at recess at one time. The equipment will alleviate the stress of worrying that they will run into each other or accidentally hurt someone because of the amount of students on the playground. This will also give them an opportunity to get to know other friends (due to the fact that we were all displaced at different campuses).
