Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in great poverty and face so many challenges on a daily basis. Many of my students depend on school for their daily meals. Also, I have students that already have a child of their own while others are responsible for caring for their younger family members. Some students have only one parent involved in their life and I even have some students that are supporting themselves. What I have learned, every student has a story and my school provides a lot more for the students than just learning lessons.
My Project
Our school continues to receive new students daily as a direct result of the near total destruction of their homeland, Puerto Rico, by the devastating hurricane last summer. These students enter are school and are immediately playing catch up because most have not attended school since last spring. Fortunately, I am able to assist in helping them make up high school credits using a recovery online program. I work with students after school, Saturday mornings in our Saturday school program, and also with students who elect to take advantage of "lunchtime tutoring."
I have many students who are motivated to learn and I need Samsung Chromebooks to help them in this endeavor.
This population of students have endured so much heartbreak and no one would have predicted their lives changing as dramatically as they have in the past year. Despite the challenges that they have encountered, I will be there to help them move forward by providing them with the high school education we are all entitled to receive.
