My students need better functioning calculators. The current ones are breaking down and not working as well. With new calculators each student will be able to use their own instead of sharing with a partner.

When you here of an urban school district, most would immediately think bad students, poor performance, or poor teacher quality. The problem is that is just a stereo type, and really being able to see our student body is a luxury. Practically all of our students are minority background, but that doesn't stop them from being amazing students with great character. Each student has a unique story of hardship, loss, and continued struggle.
When I first started at Hope Academy of West Michigan, I was excited to meet the students by getting to know them on a personal level.
These students have so much potential in life, not because they are great students, but they have great character that keeps building everyday. They have been raised with a strong foundation of hard work, empathy, and determination. My job is to inspire them, but they inspire me.
In most cases, it is important to not allow students to use calculators to build their skills. However, not all math is that simple. There needs to be available calculators in order to do certain functions or standards. When every student does not have their own calculator in the classroom or even one at home, it is difficult to ensure each student is able to complete the work.
Overall, calculators are an important tool used on a regular basis.
However, some classes I need to borrow from other teachers to ensure every student has one to use. It can be tiring to ensure each student has a calculator to use and to make sure all calculators make it back to the correct classroom.
