Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade at Valle Vista in San Jose. My school is 49% free lunch, and 40% are English Language Learners I currently have 20 students in my class. My students range in reading ability between grades 2 through 4 and are working diligently to become fluent readers. I am looking for ways for my students to be able to gain knowledge through resources available outside the classroom. I would love for each of my students to have access to a Scholastic News magazine subscription. Many of my students have limited knowledge and exposure to current events. This would enable me to connect the important current events with the reading curriculum, and make their reading more meaningful and exciting. I feel so strongly about the importance of using this teaching tool in the classroom that I have been putting out the money for these publications for my students for a few years now. Each year I request that the parents pay for these magazines and receive reimbursement from a hand full of parents. I do not press my parents because I know that they cannot afford to pay for these subscriptions. I am therefore requesting that you would consider funding these publications for my students.
