Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom come from differing backgrounds, but all of them bring a unique personality to our community of learners. My students come from low-income/high poverty homes, and with that comes different challenges. As their teacher, it is my duty to provide the safest and warmest environment for them to have their best opportunity for learning. My students need me to be more than just their teacher. Sometimes I'm a nurse, counselor, friend, mom, or superhero, and with that, I strive to help my students in any way possible.
My Project
About half of my school is made up of students who speak Spanish as their first language and usually each year I have about half of my classroom made up of those students. With that knowledge, I would like to provide more books in my classroom library that include Hispanic characters so they can see themselves in the books they read. I would also like to include books that are written in Spanish for the students who have just moved to the United States and are learning English.
I want to provide an opportunity for all my students to have access to books- no matter what language they speak.
Many of the families of our students that are Bilingual do not speak English, therefore they can't read to their own children with the books sent home currently. I want to be able to have books in my classroom library that students can take home weekly and include their families in their reading.
