This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Students are absolutely hilarious; they make me laugh every single day. They are brilliant, kind, and determined to make a difference. My students are incredibly informed with social issues and are very progressive. They are strong feminists, always fighting for equality, and will soon be running our country.
Our school is 98% students of color.
Nearly all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The neighborhood our school is in, is one of most under served communities in the state. These students will change that.
My Project
Last year we started a Journalism department at our school. Students write, produce, edit, and design news stories for the North News community newspaper.
Instead of focusing on just issues in the school, these students write about important issues that affect the whole community.
My students have studied media literacy, media bias, fake news, and why quality journalism is important now more than ever.
Our students go to community events outside of school and interview people changing the community. They cover important events and capture them, but right now we have 28 students and only one camera, which limits the media coverage we can take on. With a high SLR camera, we can capture the moments that are shaping our community and share them with the world. Many times events take place on the same day and we can only send students to cover one event. With this camera, our students will have more opportunities to cover the community they love.
