North Carolina Children's Book Award Nominee Read Aloud
Help me give my students the opportunity to experience high quality children's literature and to participate in determining the 2019 North Carolina Children's Book Award winner.
Our rural school serves a diverse student body of around 300 from pre-K through 5th grade and as the school's teacher librarian, I have the pleasure of working with every single child. Obviously each child is unique, but I think it is fair to say that in general, our students are curious, energetic, and eager to learn. Reading, of course, is the foundation upon which other academics are built and instilling a love of reading in my students is one of the most important responsibilities I have as an educator.
At our school, we strive to make reading accessible and fun for all of our students.
When reading is presented as a pleasurable experience rather than a chore, students are apt to develop a positive attitude toward reading and will be motivated to read outside of school for personal enrichment as well as for academic purposes. Creating a buzz around the North Carolina Children's Book Award helps to fuel our efforts and students are particularly excited when we have the books available for them to check out and take home to share with their families.
My Project
Reading aloud to children is one of the easiest and most effective ways that we can model effective reading strategies, show students what fluent reading looks and sounds like, and motivate students toward independent reading. The books selected for this project will expose students to a variety of authors, themes, and illustration styles during scheduled library media class read alouds. Following the completion of this project, the books will be added to our library collection and made available to students and teachers for checkout.
Promoting and strengthening our school's reading culture is essential to the success of our students.
The books selected for this project have all been nominated for the North Carolina Children's Book Award. My students will vote for their favorite books in March 2019 and the results will be reported to the award committee, ultimately contributing to the determination of the winner. Sharing the books across grade levels and providing students the opportunity to help "elect" their favorite among them will make this a project that will include every single student, making it a true school-wide reading event.
